The foes are biting, his head hung low,
It rained so hard, the stones and blows,
Yet, even as his blood ran cold,
Victory beckons! To the Lord, he holds.

Sons of Man

Sons of Man

Linked by blood and common plan,
Two, these greatest sons of man*,
The first came forth to till the land,
The Word sown next, The Lord’s own hand.
~ D.F.

*Jesus and his older cousin, John the Baptist:

“This is the one about whom scripture says: ‘Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, he will prepare your way before you.’

I tell you, among those born of women, no one is greater than John; yet the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”
~ Luke 7:27-28

Big Night

Big Night

Host of angels in garments white,
The heavens awake, dazzling light.
Focus now, pray, get the notes right,
A few days more, the LORD’s big night!
~ D.F.

And suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying:

“Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favour rests.”
~ Luke 2:13-14

Last Turning

Last Turning

Daylight dimming,
Clouds darkening,
Breeze, changing,
Pulse quickening,
Stomach churning,
One last turning,
Spirit releasing.

Angels appearing.

~ D.F.

“When Jesus had taken the wine, he said, “It is finished.” And bowing his head, he handed over the spirit.”
~ John 19:30

Heaven and the Bee

Perhaps this little bee can give us a glimpse of heaven?

Bursting with life,
not barely,

Ever so busy,
yet not fretting,

One at home,
Hearts resting.

“You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.”

~ St Augustine of Hippo
(13 Nov 354 – 20 Aug 430)

+ May the souls of our dearly departed find eternal rest. Amen. +

All Saints

All Saints

Invitation accepted,
The multitudes arrive.

Arduous journeys, labour and strife.

Spirits gently bearing,
Prayers and incense rising.

Their just reward to be had,
See, the royal table lays set.

The LORD’s banquet at last attending,

Let all saints rejoice and be glad.

“After this, I had a vision of a great multitude, which no one could count, from every nation, race, people, and tongue.

They stood before the throne and before the Lamb, wearing white robes and holding palm branches in their hands.

They cried out in a loud voice:

“Salvation comes from our God, who is seated on the throne, and from the Lamb.”

Revelation 7:9-10

Faith & Reason

Of Faith & Reason

Is Faith truly opposed to Reason as some say?

For as the leaves of this plant are aligned against each other with little overlap in order to capture the most of the available sunlight,

Faith and Reason come together from seemingly opposed ends to enlighten our minds and hearts.

While Reason is the foundation upon which Faith is built,

Faith yields the context within which Reason evolves beyond mere logic and finally acquires real meaning.

“I believe, in order to understand; and I understand, the better to believe.”
~ St Augustine of Hippo

Was God so callous as not to provide even the most basic creature comforts for His only Son when it came time for His birth?

No warm room at the inn.

No midwife attending.

Just a bare and rough manger in which animals found shelter as night fell.

But yet, what manner of crib was chosen in which Our Lord could snuggle and bury his face as he slumbered?

Simply, it was Mary’s elbow, whose inviting hollow beheld God, and kept Him safe and warm on that most humble of nights.

“While they were there, the time came for her to have her child, and she gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.”

~ Luke 2:6-7
